Ibrahim Palace: A Historical Gem in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia
Ibrahim Palace, also known as Qasr Ibrahim or AlQoat Palace, is a historical castle and fort located in the north of Alqoat neighborhood, Hofuf, Al-Ahsa, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. This architectural masterpiece is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.
History
Ibrahim Palace was built in 1556 by Ali Ibn Ahmed Ibn Lawand Al-Burayki, the Ottoman governor of the time. It was the headquarter of the Ottoman army during their rule of Al-Ahsa and was attributed to Governor Ibrahim bin Afaisan, Prince of Al-Ahsa during the reign of Imam Saud. The palace was later renovated in 1801 by Governor Ibrahim Ibn 'Ufaysan, who many believe the castle was eventually named after.
Architecture
The palace covers an area of 16,500 square meters and is characterized by an architectural style that blends Islamic and military features with those of the Ottoman Empire. Its design includes arcs, domes, mihrab, minaret, towers, barracks, and horse stables, all surrounded by a fortified wall.
Current Status
In 2018, Ibrahim Palace became one of 12 sites designated as world heritage within Al-Ahsa, which was registered as a UNESCO site. The palace is currently being restored, with plans to install two exhibition rooms as part of the renovation.
