Uqair Fort, located in the Al-Ahsa Governorate of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, is an ancient seaport city and the first seaport in the Persian Gulf[1]. It is situated 70 km (43 mi) south of Dhahran, a Saudi Aramco compound, and 70 km (43 mi) northeast of Hofuf on the Al-Ahsa Oasis. The fort is built next to a harbor and shallow lagoon.

History

The origin of Uqair Fort is still under question, and its history remains inconclusive. However, it is believed to have been built during the Ottoman times. Uqair was the first seaport in the Arabian Gulf, and it played a significant role in the region's ancient trading routes. The fort was involved in the movement of goods such as timber, food, coffee, cardamom, spices, clothing, perfume, incense, and sandalwood, coming from India, China, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and Oman. Uqair also had ties with ancient Gerrha and Mesopotamia.

The Fort

The main fortification of Al-Uqair comprises buildings for accommodation and offices, as well as a large courtyard that is accessible via a gate. The fort's walls are corroded by the salt air, the wood of the doors is smoothed by the wind, and the rusty bolts refer to the glories that were once celebrated here. The fort currently consists of a stone rampart topped with mud brick and is 150 feet long on each side.
